Worship

02/19/2010

Why do we worship?  What compels us to seek out greater sources than ourselves?  Why are we not enough?  history seems to show that we are hardwired to either elevate a human to godlike levels, or create a deity.  Either this instinct represents some survival trait we needed at one point, or there is (or was) a deity which hardwired the desire in us.  If that is the case, do we truly have free will?  If we’re forced to worship something to find fulfillment, we become slaves of whatever that object is, even if it is self.  Or maybe it’s not a zero sum game.  Perhaps other things fill this void too: relationships, possessions, etc.  If that’s the case, then perhaps the need to worship that which we perceive as “better” is just part of the desire to better ourselves, which is in turn part of mere survival.
